Stopped by at 2:30pm on a Wednesday and they were still serving lunch. They happily accommodated our family with three small children. Waiter was very friendly in giving a history of the area. Food was delicious. The three must-haves are Bata bread, sweet potato fries and blueberry burger. Clean bathrooms. Parking on street.

We tried Bata's when it first opened. The space is gorgeous, and a nice addition to the area, but the staff were overwhelmed. We had called ahead but they weren't expecting us, so we sat at the bar until a table opened up. The bartender was very friendly but pretty clueless about wines or liquors. The flatbread pizza was disappointing. After several months we tried again. Called ahead. They seemed a little surprised to see us. A couple came in after us and proceeded to the back room, after which we were told that they had taken our table and we could sit at the bar. EXCUSE ME?? We left and won't return.

I was in Cedar Rapids for just one night and wanted to try a local place. Bata's wound up being perfect for someone who was alone to go for a great dinner. I sat at the bar and was kept company by Betsy, the bartender, who was extremely friendly and helpful in my selections. She recommended the pomegranate lemonade for my cocktail, since I like sweet, and the blueberry burger for my entree, as it is one of their most popular items. I was not disappointed! The cocktail was refreshing, unique, and delicious. As a burger lover, I can honestly say that the blueberry burger is the best I've ever eaten. The icing on the cake was the sweet potato fries. On their own they would have been wonderful, but they had a delectable balsamic reduction with brown sugar sauce on them that brought them from "delicious" to "WOW!". While thoroughly enjoying all of the above, the owner made his way into the bar area to help wash some glasses. We had a very interesting chat about how Bata's came to be. He seemed a very nice guy- It's easy to see why the staff is so pleasant. I felt the price of $28 for two of the cocktails, and my (huge) meal was extremely fair. Add a wonderful atmosphere and kind people and it was a really nice evening for a middle aged woman traveling alone in a new city. This will be my go-to place when I pass through Cedar rapids again. I can't get that burger off of my mind!

As suggested in the chalkboard, we sat ourselves. They were busy, and short staffed, which was unfortunate. It took some time for our server to be able to take our order. And subsequent additions of refills, box, the check, all took too long between. Again, not the fault of our server. Son and I had Bison Burger. I skipped the horseradish mayo but he didn't, and enjoyed it. I wish I would've had the egg cooked fully through as I dislike yolk but the burger was still good. Wife had the veggie burger, but needed ketchup with it. By the time she was able to get the ketchup the burger was cold. Again, unfortunate but I don't blame our waitress, she was moving as fast as she could helping everyone. They should've tapped the bartender to make condiment/drink refill rounds. He had only one customer at the bar. Good food, great atmosphere, waitress did her job the best she could, needed an extra hand or two. It took us 20 minutes after eating to just get the check and a box for leftovers.

This is my favorite restaurant in Cedar Rapids. Every time I'm in town for business, I make sure to stop by.

Come on Cedar Rapids, where is fine dining located? Does anyone here ever visit another town where fine food is served? Demand real cuisine 'por favor'. Glad I moved out years ago, as far as dining is concerned.

Great food and service. Flatbread pizzas were fabulous. Love this area of Cedar Rapids. Practically next to Newbo City Market.

Good food, good food. Decent Service, but the bar - is really really small and doesn't have a large selection of anything. - Parlor City is right up the street. Go there!

Being new to Cedar Rapids, and working in the downtown area, I was eager to try the various restaurants around town. I had heard that the options in downtown Iowa City were better, but I wanted to make that decision for myself. With the lady friend in tow, I headed to Bata's for lunch. The restaurant's interior is lovely. You walk through a curtain into a comfortable, open layout, with a bar in the second "area," for lack of a better term, and seating for not too many, enough to satisfy the restaurant's costs without overburdening the staff or making for a loud lunch rush or dinner experience. The decor was warm; perhaps it changes seasonally, but my winter visits were greeted with dark hues and lots of wood. The first meal I had consisted of the black-bean burger, a flatbread pizza specially made vegan (basically just without the cheese), and the glazed sweet potato strips. I must begin with the sweet potatoes: Dear goodness. I'm a huge fan of broiled or grilled sweet potatoes as it is, but Bata's adds a sweet brown-sugar or caramel sauce that is not overpowering or thick, but is rich and delicious. I don't agree that they are "more of a dessert," but they are sweet for sure. The black-bean burger held together well and was nice and moist. The pizza had a nice crunchy crust, and the toppings accompanied each other well. All in all, very tasty food. No complaints whatsoever. As an additional plus, the wait staff is very friendly. I twice have been waited on by the same woman, whose name I do not know (Sorry!), and she is very kind and pleasant, as you'd expect Iowa wait staff to be. That adds another element to this local joint that helps it stand out from the chain options in the area and beckons a third trip and more after that. I have only been to Bata's for lunch, but being so close to my work, it is a great option. Not pricey, good options, high quality, and well-deserving of high praise.

We were here Saturday night -- able to walk in without reservations. After being warmly welcomed and seated, we enjoyed perusing the broad drink menu. Tina, our server, explained menu options and "worked" with us to modify one of the flatbread pizzas to be vegetarian. Others in our party enjoyed burgers in addition to pizzas. The sweet potato fries were outstanding. We are from out of town, otherwise we'd be back soon.

The tacos were excellent. The best. Ever. They are the authentic empanadas type, family recipe, handmade, filled with perfectly flavored beef. They are simple and simply excellent. I will add these to my list of dishes that I love from Bata's. Nick and Tony and the staff are so welcoming - truly a family that loves food and loves their guests! Oh, before I forget, the lemon cake and the flourless chocolate cake are glorious! Can't wait to go back!

Try the blueberry burger with sweet potato fries. Oh and you had better start off with some bata bread. You will not be disappointed! This charming restaurant, tucked in the Newbo area of Cedar Rapids, was once a jewelry store. Much of the integrity of the old classic-look was retained. The unique food combinations, local beers, and charming atmosphere make this place a definite stop.

Absolutely outstanding! One of the best, if not THE BEST, meals my husband and I have ever had in Cedar Rapids. We started with the Thai meatballs along with a raspberry margarita and an old fashioned - SO good! For our entrees we had a blueberry burger and the angel pork wing dinner with buffalo sauce. Both were so tasty, but the blueberry burger--it was spicy, sweet, salty, and savory all at once! And that blueberry aioli... man alive it was crazy good! The beers we had (both on tap) were paired perfectly with our entrees. We were stuffed but we decided to try the lemon cake, which was so moist and delicious. It wasn't too sweet or too tart, just right, and it was the perfect end to a perfect meal. Service was great - attentive but not annoying or bothersome. Our waitress was sweet and quirky and was fun to talk to. We will absolutely be back!!!

We went there for a work lunch, and I loved it! The food was one-of-a-kind, as well as the atmosphere. Upon departing, we were all discussing how great our meals were. All the food is made by a chef, and the portion sizes were just right! Definitley can't wait to return.

This review is long overdue and I've been remiss on not completing it. Batas has a small menu & at their busiest the acoustics of this small restaurant make it difficult for my hard of hearing husband to enjoy conversations with me and/or friends, but with that being said the customer service and taste of the food keep us coming back time and again. Batas bent over backwards to help me achieve a wonderful anniversary meal for my husband through take-out. We were unable to go out due to circumstances beyond on our control and they made sure we had steaks, at perfect temperature, with all the works and lemon cake for dessert. Since then, I ate in the restaurant, I wanted something sweet but really just a fruit option, not cake. Our waitress acquired some grapes for me. Love this place!

Went to this restaurant on the 2nd week of its opening. Took a bike ride up the Cedar Valley trail and stopped in the NewBo area. Their blueberry burger was a special at the time and I loved its creativity. The burger itself was pretty good but I love the fresh idea. The sweet potato fries were ok (the topping they had on it was too sweet). It did not pair well with the already sweet blueberry burger. I give this restaurant 4 stars because they are willing to experiment with food and give CR some good variety (we desperately need it...). Please keep coming up with yummy creative food and we will keep coming!

I like to try different restaurants when I travel for work, and this place was a great find. At 8 am, I was one of 6 tables in the entire place, and it was pretty calm and quiet. The neighborhood (NewBo, I think) is pretty cool - I'd definitely walk around if I had time during the day. The building was beautiful and the inside was even better. I love the tin ceiling tiles and the local art arranged around the dining room was fun. The servers were very friendly and efficient. I asked for some suggestions and their advice was great. Per their advice, I ordered a Workman's Comp dark ale by Lion Bridge Brewery - very dark, with coffee flavors, but not too heavy. (This later was an amazing pairing with my gluten free spice cake. YUM.) For dinner, I ordered the Fist Tort Trio and the homemade Kimchi veggies. Fish tacos are one of my favorite dishes, and this did not disappoint. It was a unique preparation - the cod was neither fried, nor in filet form; instead it was flaked, almost like when you break up tuna fish from a can. I liked it because it almost made it creamy and fluffy in texture, without the grease or unnecessary breading. You couldn't really tell that there were small amounts of white sauce and cheese underneath the cod and greens, but the flavor was definitely there. There was a generous serving of mixed baby greens on each tort, and then the best part: the cabbage. Typically, you'll see chopped raw cabbage (usually white), but these torts had a sweet/sour red cabbage (eastern European style that would be served with sauerbraten). A very pretty presentation for sure, but you wonder: How does it taste? Delicious. It was a refreshing twist on the usual preparation. The vinegar provided the acidity that the usual lime wedge would, and the sweetness married well with the creamy cod and fresh baby greens. Two salsas were also provided: green & red. Both were spicy, but in different ways - the green was tangier than the red, and the red was smokier than the green. Both equally tasty. Definitely try this dish. Well portioned and reasonably priced, too. And then there was the kimchi. I love kimchi. I order it wherever I see it on a menu. This version was pretty good. It wasn't as tender as kimchi cabbage usually is (that would be served in an asian restaurant), but that could mean that it hadn't been fermenting as long, and possibly because the usual Napa cabbage hadn't been used. I liked the abundant carrots and I LOVED the heat. I wished that there had been a bit more structure to the liquid - it wasn't as thick as kimchi "sauce" generally is, but the flavor was not lacking, so this wasn't a real issue. My only negative comment on the kimchi was the price. I ordered it because I wanted to try it, but at a $6 price point, I would not order it again. It was good, but not "$6 good". In hindsight, I am honestly a little put off by the price because of the simplicity and low cost of ingredients: white cabbage, carrots, vinegar, chili paste, etc. And then you put it all in a pot and let it sit. Yes, tasty, but the price tag is a bit ridiculous. Lastly was my gluten free spice cake. WOW. I do not do a GF diet, but I wanted to try something different. It was very interesting and spicy indeed! I don't want to ruin the surprise, but if you like spice (as I have indicated above that I do), definitely give this a try. It was rich, but not too heavy, with a complex flavor profile. And it paired well really well with the dark ale too. All in all, a great meal. I will definitely come back next time I am in CR.

This restaurant has promise. Food is good (better than most places in Cedar Rapids) and they seem to care about what they serve. Even the service is pretty fair even on a week night during the holidays. However, the reason why I only give this place three stars is the atmosphere sucks. Sure you go to a restaurant for food, but I'm also their to enjoy my time with people. The place is not intimate. The lighting was so bright. You are basically eating with everyone at the restaurant. I think this place would do itself a major improvement if they purchased booths, secured some of the seating with plants or some sort of decorating. The vide I get from the place is horrible. Additionally, this probably isn't a trend, but our waiter the night I went was talking to his friends of the whole time. My friend and I could hear the entire conversation and it honestly wasn't something I wanted to hear. I was trying to have an engaging conversation, but our waiter and his friends were just yaking about their bachelor lives. I probably won't go back for this very reason.

The blueberry burger was fantastic! Service was probably the best I've ever seen. I drink water like crazy when I go out to eat. As a result, I usually have an empty glass. Not here! The place was busy, but I never reached the bottom of my water. Very, very good service. The sweet potato fries are crazy good - but more of a dessert than an appetizer. You've been warned!

As I visit Cedar Rapids for work quarterly I love trying new places. This restaurant has been my all time favorite. Those sweet potato fries were amazing. The customer service was friendly and helpful. Great wine selections to go with each menu item. Will be back again !!!

Friendly, helpful waitstaff are the real reason to try an evening at Bata! While there we also loved the expertly restored interior - warm brick walls, gorgeous wood floors, beautiful intricate tin ceiling and wonderful original art. And then there's the food! We enjoyed the cornmeal crusted chicken although it was a tiny bit dry, but our dinner companions loved the blueberry burger and beef tenderloin filet. If you eat nothing else, go for the impressive cocktail menu and order a plate of the sweet potato appetizer. It's seriously one of the greatest things you'll ever eat!

Loved chatting with Nick Bata who is quite a talented young man. His passion and innovation is obvious. I loved the carmelized sweet potato fries and the Black and Tan with raspberry local brew with a finish of Guinness. I would go try more

Batas has the complete package. Both the dining and atmosphere are delightful. The only negative is do not sit by the front door in the winter. My wife and I made reservations on a Saturday night. We were greeted warmly and promptly seated. Our server was extremely accommodating and attentive to us. Average selection of beers, but the ones they have are delicious. Also an average size menu but all items were unique and elegant. Tried the signature blueberry burger and sweet potato fries. Both recommended. Also had the hot lips pizza. Did no live up to its name of being hot. Was to full for desert. Overall this is a place we would recommend to anyone and visit again ourselves. Glad to see these types of restaurants in Cedar Rapids.

Food just ok. Not cravable. Service great. Do not order the $15 bottle if wine. I should know better. Blueberry burger too sweet. Sweet potatoe fries really too sweet. I love unusual flavor combinations when well balanced. These were not.

Thorough wine list and micro brews on tap from an Nebraska brewery. Food was very good. I would describe it as upscale bar food. My husband and I are picky eaters and we were able to alter their entrees to out diet preferences. I had chicken sandwich with pesto (more like an aioli) and Gouda. The chicken was cooked perfectly, not dry in the least. The sweet potato fries are a treat! Atmosphere is very nice. Tables and chairs mostly with cushioned seats along the walls. All the staff are very nice even though it was very busy. The few things that kept me from giving it 5 stars: The service was slow and my order was brought out wrong. Also the menu is very limited. I wish they had some healthier options like more salads, organic/local veggies, hormone-free and/or grass-fed meat. The latter may just be my dream for the future cuisine in the New Bo area.

Holy Cow lunch special (blackbean burger w avocado) & chips- seriously delicious and filling. Priced right down the middle of - thats what I'd expect to pay for a blackbean burger. The digs are gorgeous- nice separation between seating areas- the bathrooms are immaculate and the kitchen is too- which I guess should be listed first in a restaurant review but I dont want pee germs all over me when I'm having someone else cook for me All I can think about is the day I get to spend here drinking too much red wine.

I tried out Bata's today for a business lunch. I will try not to harshly judge a place that has only been open a week, with a limited menu. The verdict: Our group was semi-impressed with the place and we agreed that we'd like to go back for a dinner when the restaurant becomes fully operational. We all tried the flatbread pizza's, which were mediocre. For the price ($7.99), the Mediterannean flatbread is really the only one worthy of the spend. It had basil, tomato, goat cheese and balsamic on it. We felt that these pizza's used a flatbread that is slightly different than most cracker crust flat breads we've tried. It was thicker and doughier, but not awful. Quite small though. They had a great beer & wine selection and we were reminded by the Manager that full entree's (steak, chicken, fish dishes) would be added after Labor Day. 3 things that I noticed were 1.) The staff is using iPad's and an iPad app as their point of sale system. Cool! 2.) They had a real brick oven fired up back in the kitchen. Cooler! And 3.) They had daily lunch specials that were rattled off by the server that weren't on the menu and they sounded delicious. Coolest. Let's see what these former caterer's can cook up with their own restaurant. It looks like they're off to a pretty good start so far. Property - 4 stars Staff - 4 stars Ambience - 5 stars Food - 3 stars Price - 4 stars

Three of my friends and I were in this beautiful new district and stopped here for lunch. The atmosphere is lovely. The wait staff was friendly and attentive. We sampled the chips with feta (really really good) and had salads (truly fresh and very nice greens) and a veggie flatbread that may have been the best flatbed pizza I have ever had - the crust was crisp to a perfect degree and loaded with veggies and right amount of cheese. They have bottles of wine galore for twenty dollars and beers to choose from . . . the menu is nicely varied and I can't wait to go back and try other items. The day we went they also had a chocolate dream pie and a lemon cake but we were not hungry after our food - it is on our to do list in the future! This is a place I definitely will go back with again and again.

Recently grabbed a quick dinner after work...great wine selection and beer options. Flatbread pizzas were very yummy. Enjoyed my time there. And...the restroom had to be the cleanest one I have seen in a long in any establishment! Truly...I work on property management and clean bathrooms means clean other areas (like kitchens) in places. Next time...pay attention to who is paying attention to details in places you go to.

The Veggie Tortes (tacos) are delicious and the carmelized sweet potato fries are ridiculously good. The four times I have come to Bata's, the service has been realllllly slow, but very friendly.

Not worth the price. The first time I visited Bata's I left fairly satisfied. Showed up on Tuesday night, which was pretty slow for them. It was my first time so I kept an open mind. Our waitress was nice and entertaining and the food was pretty good. The atmosphere really bothered me however. There was only one other table in the restaurant and no music was playing so we were subjected to listening to the kitchens radio and the staff banter. I'm not a fan of hearing the guy who just cooked my food try to bum a smoke from a bartender. I enjoyed my food that night, however both the person I went with and myself had an unexpected sweet syrup on our dishes that wasnt verbalized by the waitress or menu. I had a fried chicken special that came with crepes, sweet potatoes, and overly sweet blueberry sauce. My guest got the ribs which seem to have a honey sauce all over the plate. The second time was much worse. I had three guests and we showed up at about 745 on a Saturday night. Their hours are until 830. After waiting a half an hour for a table our waitress informs us that if we don't get an order in the kitchen will be upset. I ordered that black bean burger that was bland and boring. I also paid an extra two dollar for "feta chips". All that was different from the regular chips that one of my guests got was a slight sprinkling of feta. Our food seemed rushed and not nearly as put together as plates we saw going out while waiting for a table. I understand the kitchen is closing but we showed up within their hours and are paying the same price. I digress. Its overly sweet food focused on starches and meat. And the staff is friendly but nearly as professional as the front they try to put up.

I have been wanting to try Batas forever and was pleased with my experience. The blueberry burger was delicious. The blueberry spread that accompanies the burger was so unique and flavorful. Another guest had the salmon and wasn't a huge fan as it wasn't quite prepared to what we anticipated it was rather spicy and the vegetables surrounding it overpowered the salmon itself. Enjoyed the ambience and the service was impecibile.

Poor food and/or poor service are two of the biggest negative factors a patron can experience. Our first and second impression of this restaurant are that the service is really poor. There is no warm fuzzy at the front door and the staff looks like they've simply been told to wear black pants with a white shirt (press it if you have time perhaps) and show up to take orders. Sadly, we've been left with the impression that there is a lack of organization at the front of the restaurant that translate all the way to the back. Not much enthusiasm from the employees here although the food is pretty good. The format of this restaurant is different enought that I'd like to see them succeed, but with the service lacking and the owher only snuggling up to the who's who of the town, I doubt I'll feel comfortable dining here frequently. Too bad, the fish tacos were pretty good.

I have eaten at Bata's several times now - and only seem to go when others suggest this place. Not to say that it isn't good, but it's just not one of my top choices in the Cedar Rapids area. I was compelled to write a review after the last time that I went to Bata's and did not enjoy my experience. The primary issue: the waitress. We (party of two) were seated at an awkwardly placed table, and our waitress seemed... off-kilter. I am sure that she is a wonderful woman, but she had a characteristic that made her uncomfortable and we were continuously unsure if she was joking or serious... and our jokes did not go over well with her. The food has mixed reviews in my opinion. The caramelized sweet potato fries are odd. Upon first taste I thought that I hated them, but there is a quality that made me want to like them, therefore I continued to eat them in efforts to try to like them. I am still unsure. The cedar plank salmon was delicious - moist, well seasoned and excellent sauce. However, watching someone walk through the restaurant to go to what I presume to be the basement, and walking back upstairs through the restaurant with large Sysco brand bags of mixed veg really set the stage for the bed of veggies to be unappetizing. For a $26 plate of food... I would expect to at least be fooled to think that these were fresh vegetables. Also, the menu says that the dish is served with duck fat poached potatoes. By this, I was quite fooled as my dish came with two, approximately 1" thick by a 1" in circumference pieces of purple potato. That is not very much potato, when it is highlighted on the menu. If that salmon had been served with some fresh veg, and some potato worth talking about... it would be worthy of the cost and I would be writing raving reviews. The blueberry burger was fun on the first visit. Again, similar to the sweet potato fries, it was odd and that it what drew me back to eating it. The sauce served with the burger was delicious when I dipped the potato chips into it. The flat bread pizzas are fine. Nothing to get excited about. The all vegetable one was relatively flavorless, and could have REALLY used some seasoning to perhaps get some of the flavors out of the vegetables and garlic being used. The Sicilian pizza was pretty good. Perhaps one of the best things on the menu. It had some good meats on it, in a nice portion. Mine was heavy on what tasted like a canned marinara sauce, but otherwise good. Another note: it is terrible to sit in any of the front dining area in the winter. I have been to the restaurant during several seasons, and the nature of the front door makes it exceptionally chilly. Overall, it is a decent place. There are some things that may be relatively easy fixes that could occur to make this place dynamite.

Completely 100% thrilled with this restaurant. Diverse menu that is really affordable. I ordered the "special" burger with bacon ground into it. Juicy and delicious. Other diners with me got Caribbean flat bread pizza and encrusted chicken entrees and were very impressed also. We also tried the rib wing appetizers and pecan pie for dessert. Had delightful service people in a very homey atmosphere. Two thumbs up!
